Book Review : The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, is a modernist novel which criticizes the American dream. This novel in many ways is similar to F. Scott Fitzgerald's life because of his poverty in his early life and his wealthiness later on in his life. The decline of American dream, the theme of the novel, is portrayed through Gatsby, one of the major characters. The novel is about a regular hardworking man, Nick, who moves to Long Island and spends time with his rich and married cousin, Daisy, who has an affair with Nick's wealthy neighbor, Jay Gatsby. This book , in my opinion, is really good and exciting because of the major conflict and the climax.
The decline of the American dream, the theme of the book, is portrayed through Jay Gatsby. Gatsby's is a very rich man who spends his money in expensive parties, which in reality is a plan to try to reunite with his lost love Daisy. In the end Daisy refuses to get back with Gatsby and he suffers a great tragedy. These events show that the American dream is always the same, to be successful, but even though Gatsby had everything it still wasn't enough.
The main character in The Great Gatsby is Nick Caraway. Nick is a hardworking bond salesman who decides to move to Long Island. Nick, unlike the other characters in this book, is honest, trustworthy, and reliable. Nick, throughout the whole novel, is always a good friend to everyone and is always spoken highly of. Nick true character is further strengthen when he leaves Long Island because of all the drama and bad influences surrounding him.
In the novel, the major conflict is between Gatsby and Daisy. Gatsby has become rich and wealthy and he attempts to regain his past love by throwing expensive parties but in the end Daisy refuses him because of his mysterious past. Gatsby's American dream of having riches, which came true, was not enough to make Daisy leave her husband and fall in love again with Gatsby. In the end, Daisy continues her life with her husband and Gatsby suffers a great tragedy.
The decline of the American dream, the theme of the novel, is portrayed in the character of Jay Gatsby. The major conflict in this novel is that even though Gatsby did everything Daisy, she refused him in the end. The theme of the novel and the major conflict in the novel are connected in a influential way. Both the theme and the major conflict emphasize each other and makes a deeper impact on the reader. I recommend this book to everyone because its a classic. This book is very good because of its theme, it makes everyone think, what is the American dream?
