How It Feels to be Colored Me

One thing I consider to be good about my color is that I am not too dark, but neither am I white. I consider myself fair skin, which helps a lot when I go out. I don’t get as many bad looks as many colored people.
I have gotten discriminated by my color, who hasn’t? Just because I am colored, even if it’s not dark, people see me as not capable of buying something expensive, they think we Mexicans are poor or something. Being colored me helps me “blend in” with my culture, and in cases it gives me opportunities others may not have. For example, colleges would want to have more Hispanics enrolled. Many jobs want bilingual workers, mostly ones that speak Spanish other than Chinese or Korean.
I hadn’t had a problem in school with race until I attended Schurr High School. Asians, Mexicans, and, people from Iran or someplace over there. That is when I started noticing the race problem. But not until this year, in Woesners class did I really look into it.

My America

I hear America is a land of opportunities; immigrants such as my parents have come because of that saying, in my opinion, I believe that saying is not true. I’ve seen that with both my parents and some family members. True they are immigrants, but why can’t they get a job? Is it because they are Mexican? Or because they do not speak English fluently? I believe everyone should have an opportunity to work. Langston Hughes mentioned in “My America” the things other people may do and he can’t, all of those mentioned also go to Mexican-Americans.
Even though I live in this country, and I was born in this country, I can say that I don’t really like it. In America we have a lot of discrimination, prejudice, hatred, corruption, and many races are made a minority, especially Mexican-Americans and African-Americans. When I watch the news, which to say the truth is rarely, there is always news of people doing bad things, which make American as a whole look bad. Even our president makes America look bad, I wouldn’t in detail about that because saying the bad truths about him is a bad thing in this country. What ever happened to freedom of speech?

Locked in time..book review

Locked in time by Lois Duncan is about a girl about the age of 17 named Nore. Her mother had apssed away and it was summer time to come home form her boarding school in New England. She went to live with her father and his new family in Shadow Grove. Her dad remarried to a beautiful young woman named lissete and she had a son named Gabe and a daughter named Josie. As Nore settles in for the summer she starts to realize some strangenessin her dad's new family.
In this book Nore is determined to convince her dad of all the strange things that occur such as Gabe trying to drown Nore after a boating trip or all the old documents she found stating that lissete has had 6 husbands before and they all tragically died or disappeared. Also explaining how her marriages to them lasted only a little bit of time. Nore found documents dating back form the late 1800's.
Nore began to investigate even more to find out what was going on and what she found was that lissete was married in 1890 and as she aged her husband lsot interest in her and would sleep around especially with one certain woman who practiced witchcraft . lissete told that woman to leave her husband alone and the woman told her that she would trade her youth for her husband. And so she agreed and it worked for her children as well and the reason she would have to get rid of her husbands were because they would start to notice that none of them were aging. And so she would remarry each time so that they would be able to support her family and therye nice house because they couldnt hold any jobs without a social security and thyree socials were dated way back in the 1800's.
This book is good because the writer gives alot of detail and it's one of those chilling suspensful books.

how it feels to be colored me (jen)

I am half Mexican and half Salvadorian. I was born and raised in East Los Angeles. I now live in Monterey Park where majority of the poeple in the neighbor hood are asian. When i was in grade school alot of my classmates were black and asian. Being oblivious to racism and stereotypes and discrimination i never notcied that they were so different then i was they were fun they were my friends. As i matured i learned that there was so much negativity towards each race and cultures . i realized that no matter what race you were there would be some sort of negativity towads you . Being a Mexican or in my case a latina in a latino community wasn't so bad because i was among pople of the same race and culture. Living in Monterey Park i would sometimes feel left out being dark skinned and hispanic. but i never let it really get to me. I am a human being just like everyone else.. why should i let something like the color of my skin or ethnicity stop me from doing what i want and being myself. I sometimes think and wonder how boring it would be if all of us were one race. Then i also wondr how life would be not having to deal with all the chaos that goes on because of race.

native son reflection

In native sun i have learned that blacks and whites are seen so differently. It shows that whites have it easy in life they dont have to go through so many judgements, discriminations, and stereotypes. And for the colored people, their lif is a big prejudgement. Other then that it also taught me that whenever you do wrong there's always a consequence. And we tend to take olot of oppurtunities in life for granted. Fear can change the way we see things and the way we pursue them. good comlmunication with family and friends is good to so that they can help us with advice for our own obsticales in life.

Josefa_Eight ways of looking at friend ship

What is friendship?
but is it a term, that uses
Friend describing you and me
Ship-to show how strong it may be

Friend ship is like the growth of
a tree, it defines the two differences
of what a friend ship could be
the one that have seasons

And those who last for ever
you see a friend can be a leaf
that in time it would fall and leave.

Or it would be a root that,
would always be with you
even if you fal,But what
else can frienship mean?

It means loyalty,help
care, and kindness to those
who need them the most
It means to give with out asking

To make others feel safe
or trusting you,and be able to
tell you their hopes,
to dream with them.

No matter how far
They, or you may be
they can count on you
and you can count on them

You see friendship is not just
A, term to be used,but
it's a way of describing
The friendship that we have

Seven Ways to Let You Know About the Garfield Drill Team

The number one squad in my opinion.
Standing together to give it our all.
Never letting the squad down.

Charisma, talent, flexibility, and dedication is what you need.
Being number one is not everything, it’s the only thing.

We spend all our time together.
Making new friends that you will never forget.
There might be a little drama,
But with communication it all fades away.

Reaching down to give it our all.
We push it to the limits.
Practicing like our lives depended on it.

When it comes to competitions,
It is an amazing feeling of excitement.
All your adrenaline is given on the floor.
Waiting anxiously to receive an award.

Celebrating the victory one again.
Got to thank Ms. Velasquez and Richard.
Knowing that practice was not in vain.
Happiness surrounds us, smiles and cheers.

All the hard work has paid off.
Preparing the new girls who will arrive.
Letting them know all the hard work that needs to be done.
To prepare next years squad to once again be number one.

Seven Ways of Looking at Me

I.

I am tall and lean,

Handsome and attractive.

I walk with swagger,

And appear strong and bold.

II.

I am kind and good hearted,

Full of charisma.

Able to make self-sacrifices,

Always willing to help someone in need.

III.

But my kindness is not a weakness,

Tug me the wrong way and I will retaliate.

I will snap in a way that no one would be able to recognize me,

A Jekyll and Hyde type of dilemma.

IV.

Where does this anger come from you ask.

My childhood and other unpleasant experiences,

Is what most people would say

If they knew my life.

V.

Growing up without a father,

Hanging around with bad influences,

Getting in trouble with the law,

These may be reasons for this uncontrollable fury.

VI.

But enough of that,

I know look at the future.

I will not pity myself,

I will use these misfortunes in my early life as my inspiration.

VII.

My only focus now

Is my education.

This is my key,

To my desired life.

Breaking Your Heart

How can I say good bye,
Without making you cry.

How do I say? it’s over,
Before your love get bigger.

How can we be apart?
Without breaking your heart

How can I say? I don’t love you,
Without making you blue.

How can I say goodbye,
Without you ask me, why?

How did I made this harder for me,
Why can’t you see I lied,
About my love for you.
I didn’t realize what you feel is true.

I know you gave it all,
You had, you did your very best,
But I guess I was the one who failed the test.

Imitation poem -Mayra - Eight Ways Of Looking At Our Friendship

I
As we play together
We laugh and cry.

II
You help me go through life.
You’re there with me in smiles,
Happiness, and tears.

III
No matter were you are,
There you are in good and bad .

IV
I have a arm to hold on,
I know if I fall you’ll be there to
pick me up.

V
You’re a friend that knows the good
and bad things about me,
And still loves me the same, not caring
If I act right or wrong.

VI
You give me love,
The love of the sister,
I would never have.

VII
There you are like mi diary,
Holding my secrets and never
Revealing them.

VIII
This is why I consider your
Friendship the best thing in the
World.

Glenda_ 8 ways of looking at YOU

You make me blush
As no one else has.

You make me laugh
As no one else has
Made me laugh.

As you walk i
Wish you will
Come near me.

As your lips move
I wish their
were touching mine.

Like you see them
Why can u see me?

If trying to be next to you
Makes me suffer and
Past trough this

I will!

No matter what
I will always
Admire you!

GLENDA-"HOW IT FEELS TO BE COLORED ME"

For a person like me, that is a Latina is kind of difficult to be colored and at the same time is not it makes me feel proud. One of the reasons i think is difficult for me to color because many people judge us just because we have a tan color or other, no matter what but most of the people think that in this world only whites exist. When we want to go to a town or do something else like go shopping but many people just because they see our color they start judging us and mistreating us. Or they don't want to sale us things and for me that is not fare . well that's some of the thinks that why i think is difficult for me and for many others to be a color person. and for me to be colored it could also make me proud. The reason is because in this country most of the people that work for a living is use the Latinos and others. It don't matter we should be proud of our culture and were we come from so that's the reason why i am proud of been colored.
Personal Essay-Josefa-How it feels to be colored me?

How do I feel being colored? In my own response some times being colored its hard. Being colored has his advantages in some ways and disadvantages too. Some people feel oppressed by other races. Some are sometimes ashamed of being colored. They feel that they don’t fit in, in society because of their skin color. In my situation I don’t feel ashamed of my skin color. I feel proud of being the color I am. Even though some people has put us down as bad persons only because of our colored skin and our ethnicity. I don’t think being colored has to be something bad but there some people that see us as if we where just a weird species. I am proud of the color I am and I don’t think we are less than the whites. We have the same capacity to do stuff that whites are able to do and the skin color doesn’t have to do anything with it. The only thing that changes us from being perfect to other people is the skin color. For me every one is the same no matter the skin color.
